What do you pay attention at first glance when buying apples? Probably you look at the color. Most fans of “paradise fruits” like fruits of a rich red shade. This is not surprising, because at the subconscious level it informs a person about excellent taste qualities and stimulates appetite. The Modi apples are of dark red.

This variety has been bredrecently: in the early 80s. last century. It was obtained by crossing Liberty and Gala varieties. Selection work was carried out by Italian specialists. The goal of the scientists was to obtain a variety of culture characterized by increased resistance to diseases, highly marketable look and excellent taste. They succeeded: Modi is considered a very promising variety.

It enters the fruiting period early, during the flowering period it tolerates late return frosts well, it rarely suffers from powdery mildew, it is practically not prone to blight and scab. The advantages of the variety also include high yield, which increases year by year; the possibility of obtaining fruits from trees annually and in sufficient quantity, easy tying of the latter. Of the minuses, one can single out only the tendency to overload seedlings with apples.

Interesting fact: the name of the variety comes from the surname of the Italian painter Amadeo Modigliani. On the canvases of this talented artist, you can often see a shade of red, identical to the blush that is on the surface of the ripe fruits of the Modi apple tree.

Apples of the Italian variety have excellent consumer qualities. In addition to the bright color, it’s characterized by a truncated conical, elongated shape; large sizes, weight about 200 g. Also, the fruits of the Modi variety have a delicate, crispy and incredibly juicy pulp, which reminds at the same time the fresh taste of green and saturated sweet yellow apples. The crunch lasts for a week after the fruit has been removed from the tree. From above, the apples are covered with a smooth, shiny skin with an oily coating. The dark red blush present on the surface of the fruit has yellow spots.

A cellar is suitable for storing apples, where it doesn’t  lose the taste until the end of spring. The longer the fruits lie in the cold, the sweeter they become. In addition, they are characterized by high transportability. The Modi apples are incredibly tasty when used in their basic form. But also thanks to their incomparable juiciness, they may be used for producing excellent juice and excellent wine.
