Traditionally, growing apple trees is provided by a traditional (extensive) gardening technology. This technology is relevant for gardening in regions with cold winters. There is an obvious explanation for this: there should be chosen leggy or medium-sized seedlings with a deep root system for such a garden. As a result, apple trees are frost-resistant.
Due to the large size of the seedlings, the classic gardening technology means having a large area. The order of planting trees due to this system looks as follows: the distance between rows should be 7-8 m, the distance between apple trees in one row should be 3-4 m. During the fruitage period, it is possible to harvest fruits on leggy trees only in 7-8 years. The first fruits from medium-sized trees can be harvested in 3-6 years after planting.
The use of extensive gardening technology gives an ability to obtain moderate yields. However, the costs of gardening, tending and processing the traditional garden are much smaller.
We speak about both labor and temporary costs, but more importantly – about financial ones.
the ability of growing several different varieties on a larger area;
having a good harvest in years characterized by unfavourable weather conditions;
high level of endurance and low demandingness of trees for growing conditions;
long service life of the garden (up to 35 years).
However, this technology is characterized by particular drawbacks. This is the late fruitage of apple trees; inconvenience of harvesting and reduction the efficiency of garden processing due to the sufficient height of the trunks and the big crowns of seedlings; high probability of cyclic fruitage, complexity of gardening.
Pruning trees causes special difficulties due to their spread and size. But employing the specially trained personnel gives an ability to solve this problem.
