Gala apple

Some apple varieties have many fans around the globe. This fate also befell the Gala allpes, which may be bought today in almost any supermarket. For more than 60 years, these apples have delighted both children and adults with its wonderful taste. The variety is incredibly popular in Europe and America. In terms of production, it is the second in the world after the Japanese Fuji.

It is interesting: the word “gala” is of French origin and may be translated as “festive”, “celebratory”.

The homeland of the Gala variety is New Zealand. It was bred there in the late 1950s by breeder J. H. Kidd. The latter crossed two varieties for this purpose: Kids Orange Red and Golden Delicious. Gala belongs to the late autumn or early winter variety. Since the hybrid grows and develops best in areas with a moderate and warm climate, the central and southern regions of Ukraine are perfect for its cultivation.

During the season, one adult tree can give up to 80 kg of apples. Seedlings bear fruit stably every year. Apples ripen at the end of September, but they acquire the best consumer qualities only in November.

The fruits of this medium-ripe,
high-yielding variety are
characterized by the following features:

an average size;

a round-conical shape;

a greenish-yellow background color;

the presence of an orange-red blush on the peel surface;

absence of waxy or oily coating on the peel;

tough, crisp light yellow flesh, splashing with juice;

its weight is from 110 to 150 g;

the delicate smell with admixture of caramel and nutty notes;

sweet taste with moderate acidity;

long-term preservation of the flesh of a light shade even being cut.

The fruits are well attached to the legs, which prevents the crop from falling. Average transportability and long storage duration are also advantages of the variety. When stored in industrial warehouses equipped according to all the rules with optimal temperature and humidity level, Gala apples do not spoil for about six months. Storage in an ordinary cellar allows you to enjoy apple’s taste for several months.
